6 layoff signs
anyone can check.

Twelve are changes you can see inside your workplace.

Several together may deserve a closer look.

Signs you’re about to be laid off come in two kinds. Twelve are changes you can see inside your workplace. Six are public checks anyone can run from outside. One change can have an ordinary explanation. Several together may deserve a closer look. This page covers the six public checks and where to look for each one.

The six public checks

Six checks.
All public information.

A canceled project or a change in priorities can leave you wondering what it means. Public information gives you something to check. Each of the six uses records and postings that are open to anyone. A check that turns something up is a reason to look closer. It is never a prediction.

1. WARN Act filing

What it is. A written notice of a plant closing or mass layoff. Federal law generally requires employers with 100 or more workers to give 60 days’ notice (US Department of Labor). Smaller employers and smaller cuts can fall outside the rule, so an empty search does not rule a layoff out.

Where to look. Your state labor department’s website, searched by employer name. The US Department of Labor also lists a Rapid Response contact for every state.

2. SEC restructuring disclosure

What it is. Publicly traded companies report restructuring charges, such as severance costs, in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A charge records a cost the company has already committed to. It cannot tell you whether your role is affected.

Where to look. The SEC’s public EDGAR search. Look up your employer and read its recent 8-K, 10-Q and 10-K filings. Private employers generally do not file these, so this check may not apply.

3. Earnings call linguistic shift

What it is. A change in the words executives use when they talk to investors each quarter. This check reads for repeated wording about costs and efficiency. One mention can mean little.

Where to look. Earnings call transcripts. Publicly traded companies often post them on their investor relations page, and some financial news sites publish them too.

4. Company hiring rate collapse

What it is. A sharp drop in the number of open roles your employer is advertising. Employers also pause hiring during budget cycles and leadership changes, so a drop can have an ordinary explanation.

Where to look. Your employer’s public job postings. Count the open roles and write down the number and the date. Then count again a few weeks later.

5. Senior leadership departure cluster

What it is. Several senior leaders in finance, operations or HR leaving within a short span. One departure can have many causes, such as a new job or a personal reason. The guide treats this as a supporting check.

Where to look. Public professional profiles, where people mark a role as ended. Look for recent exits at senior levels.

6. Sector-wide restructuring contagion

What it is. Several comparable employers in your industry announcing cuts within a short span. This check describes the industry. It is no evidence of a plan at your employer.

Where to look. State WARN notices filtered by industry, Bureau of Labor Statistics JOLTS data on layoff rates by sector, and the business press.

What the six checks can’t tell you.

They can’t predict a layoff or tell you who will be affected. Two of the six apply only to publicly traded companies. And all six stop at the office door. Changes you see at work may never appear in a public record.

That is the second kind of sign: twelve changes you can see inside your workplace. This page leaves those to the guide.

What the guide adds

Twelve workplace signs.
One tracking checklist.

18 Signs You’re About to Be Laid Off is a $27 guide in two PDFs. It explains the six public checks in full, and the Signal Tracking Checklist helps you track the twelve workplace signs.

  • Six public checks with where to look
  • Twelve workplace signs to review
  • Scoring instructions in the guide
  • A separate tracking checklist

The checklist gives you a written record to return to. The guide cannot predict a layoff or guarantee advance notice.

The other half of the question

Signs are one question.
Your cash is the other.

The six checks look at your employer. The free cash runway calculator looks at your household. It shows how long the cash you can reach would cover your must-pay bills with no paycheck.

It takes five questions and needs no email. Your numbers stay on your device. The result is an estimate you can review. It is not advice, and it cannot predict a layoff.

A few things to know.

What are the signs you’re about to be laid off?

They come in two kinds. Six are public checks you can run on your employer from outside, like a WARN notice. Twelve are changes you can see inside your workplace. No sign is a prediction.

Can these signs tell me whether I’m going to be laid off?

No. They help you check and track possible signs. They cannot predict a layoff, identify a layoff list, or promise advance warning.

What is a WARN notice?

It is a written notice of a plant closing or mass layoff. Federal law generally requires employers with 100 or more workers to give 60 days’ notice (US Department of Labor). You can search your state labor department’s website by employer name.

Is a hiring freeze a sign of layoffs?

It can be. It can also be ordinary. Employers pause hiring during budget cycles and leadership changes too. A drop in open roles is one check to read with the others.

Do these checks work for a private company?

Four of the six can. The SEC filing check and the earnings call check apply to publicly traded companies. The other four use information that does not depend on a stock listing.

What does the $27 guide add?

Two PDFs: the main guide and The Signal Tracking Checklist. The guide has the six public checks in full, twelve workplace signs, and instructions for reviewing what you find. The price is $27, one time payment only.
